Multi-factor authentication (MFA) — Setup and Help

Why do I need MFA?

Wānaka Helicopters Flight Training (WHFT) uses multi-factor authentication to help protect your Moodle account and learning information.

MFA adds an extra security check when you log in. Even if someone discovers your password, they should not be able to access your account without the additional authentication method.

All staff and students are required to set up MFA.

What you will need

  • Your Moodle username and password.

  • A smartphone or another compatible device.

  • An authenticator application, such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.

These applications generate temporary six-digit security codes. They are free to use for this purpose and do not require mobile reception to generate codes once configured.

Setting up your authenticator app

  1. Install an authenticator application on your phone.

  2. Sign in to https://moodle.whft.ac.nz.

  3. Open your profile menu and select Preferences.

  4. Select Multi-factor authentication preferences.

  5. Under Authenticator app, select Set up.

  6. Open your authenticator application and scan the QR code displayed by Moodle.

  7. Enter the temporary code generated by your application to complete registration.

Keep your authenticator app installed after setup. You will need it for future logins.

Logging in after setup

  1. Visit https://moodle.whft.ac.nz.

  2. Enter your Moodle username and password.

  3. When prompted, open your authenticator application.

  4. Enter the current security code.

The code changes regularly, usually every 30 seconds.

What if I change or lose my phone?

Contact WHFT administration for assistance with resetting your MFA registration.

You may need to verify your identity before your authentication method can be reset.

Do not share your password, authentication codes or account recovery information with anyone.

Can I use a security key instead?

Moodle also supports compatible physical security keys, including YubiKeys.

If you already use a security key, you may register it through your MFA preferences. An authenticator application is the recommended default for most users.

When must I complete setup?

Moodle provides a temporary grace period for initial registration. Your Moodle notification will show the time remaining.

Complete setup before your grace period expires to avoid losing access to Moodle.

Need assistance?

Contact WHFT administration if you experience difficulties registering an authenticator, cannot use a smartphone or security key, or have lost access to your registered authentication method.
